Howto: Insert a link to an email in a paragraph ?

Edit a paragraph in a structured content.
Select the text to be linked to the email.
Right-click on the selected text and choose "Create hyperlink"
In the "Address" value, type "mailto:" followed by the email address that you want to link to (e.g. mailto:support@crossfactory.net)
Tip: if you want to remove or Edit an hyperlink in a paragraph just right click on a charcter that is linked and select "Remove Hyperlink" or "Edit Hyperlink"; no need to select the whole linked text.

Howto: Switch from Browse to Edition version of the current page ?

In the page URL of your browser, insert ".off" before the ".aspx" extension of the current page OR replace the current page filename by "admin.aspx"

Howto: insert a link to a .XML (or other special extension like .DLL) file ?

.XML file extension is setup to special system handling because of use of such files for SiteNOTE configuration. Uploading such file and then trying to download it will display a "Protecfile Error" message.

Avoiding this can be done by zipping the file before uploading it.

I am editing a page for the first time, and I am required to install an ActiveX control. What should I do?

This is a normal behaviour when you are editing a page for the first time with SiteNOTE. The interactive features in SiteNOTE require that "Msxml4.cab" is installed on your computer. "Msxml4.cab" is a component provided by Microsoft.

If you see the ActiveX install bar at the top of your browser, click on install, and confirm the installation process. Note that you probably need administration rights on your computer to be able to install this ActiveX.

When I right-click on items on the page, I always get a dialog box asking me to allow access to the clipboard...

If you see this dialog box, or if your menus appear cropped like in the above picture, you have probably not set correctly the level of security of your site in the browser's properties.

Go to the menu entry "Tools/Internet Options", then select the "Security" tab. Make sure that the level of security for the "Trusted sites" is "Medium-low" and that your site is actually in the trusted sites.

Howto : insert a gallery of videos

Notice : this is not about the pictures gallery component, provided with SiteNOTE.

Purpose is to create a list of videos, while having some placeholder at the top of the list where the selected video is playing.

The example uses videos hosted on Youtube.com. Inserting a video from youtube in a web page on your website is as easy as copy/paste the "Embed" code provided on the Youtube's video page (add the parameter Autoplay to th source for the video if you want the video to automatically start). Inserting such code in a SiteNOTE page is done using the Free-Style Content element.

Steps to achieve the building of the gallery:

Create a main page for the gallery. This page will contain in its main content the list of videos. Each item of this list contains a thumbnail of the video that is linked to the page that contains the video (see below)
Each video is displayed in a separated page that is below the main video list page. The "hidden" property of the page can be set so that these subpages do not appear in the navigation (Do not forget to publish when you change a page property)
In each video page, modify the layout of the page to add a "shared content" in the main content area of the page. Edit property of this control to set the Shared Page URL to Parent.
Make the main page of the gallery a "page group" by modifying its properties. That way, when opening this page, the first subpage will be displayed.
Tip: create one video page, and use it as a template to create the others by duplicating the first one.

Howto : insert a sub list in a list

SiteNOTE handles 2 "list" content items:

List of Paragraph: easy and most common list that contains only paragraphs, and that allows to add items using the same way as paragraph (via the context menu or simply using the "enter" key)
List of Objects: This kind of list may contain several types of content in each list item, among which paragraphs and lists of paragraphs but also File links or pictures or even sub lists of objects for very structured contents.
Tip : you can modify the style of the bullets (circle, disc, number ...) using the properties of the lists (via the context menu on the list element) .

Howto : create a list of the sub-pages of the current page

In general, a section of a site that contains a number of similar pages at the same level, displays the first of these pages by default, by setting the "page group" property of the main page of the section.

However, in cases where some content (ex: introduction ...) should be displayed in this main page, it could be useful to have a list (an index) of the subpages of this section.

Edit Layout of the page to add a "subPagesIndex" control in the main content of the page. This will automatically list all pages, filtering on the current view (edit version, online, security-dependant...).

Tip: to add text before of after this control, just add other "XMLEditor" controls, and move them in the page according to your needs.

Howto : make the homepage as a dashboard, or put a table of sections in the homepage

To divide the homepage as a page containing several editable zones, a bit like a table with rows and columns that may eventually span, use the "Bloc" content item in the XMLEditor control.

You can adjust properties of the bloc item to position it exactly the way you want (size, position, etc.).

The Bloc item may contain any editable item similarly as a Section item, which means it can contains titles, paragraphs, lists, pictures, etc.
